The Perfect Nutella Crepe

Italy taught my 7 year old a very valuable lesson.

Elle learned all about NUTELLA - and the important lesson of just how delicious it is!

Our family visited Verona, Italy in August of 2018. Verona, located in Northern Italy, is over 2,000 years old. It is the home of “Romeo & Juliet” & is seriously spectacular. But...back to the food, Verona happens to be the very first place that Elle tasted Nutella.

Pietro Ferrero, an Italian pastry maker, created a sweet paste using cocoa powder, hazelnuts & sugar. This spread was shaped into a loaf, then sliced and eaten on bread. Nutella became a hit at a local carnival in the 1940s. It has since made its way around the world, and can be enjoyed in countless ways.

For Elle, it was a love affair at first taste! My very picky eater agreed to try a Nutella crepe, from a street vendor, outside of the Verona Arena . A crepe is a thin version of a pancake, and it is delicious when it is filled with Nutella.

Our family likes to make crepes on the weekend. On a Saturday or Sunday morning we can slow down & have time to enjoy a special treat. I use a crepe pan from the Italian company, Ballarini, it can be found on Amazon, here. I love that it comes with the tools you will need to spread and flip the crepes.

Here is the simple, tried & true recipe we follow:

Ingredients:

*2 cups of all purpose flour

*2 ¼ cup of milk

*¼ cup of sugar

*4 eggs

*¼ cup of melted butter

*1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

*Nutella

Directions:

*In a blender, pulse together flour, milk, sugar, eggs, butter and vanilla until smooth.

*Let crepe batter rest for 5 minutes.

*Heat crepe pan over medium heat, lightly brush with oil.

*Pour ¼ - ½ cup of crepe batter in the middle of the pan. With  the crepe spatula, using a circular motion, spread the batter evenly around the pan.

*Cook for 30-40 seconds on one side, then flip. Repeat with the rest of the batter.

*When the crepe has cooked, spread the desired amount of Nutella down the middle & fold over. Enjoy!

Yields 12 crepes.
